[ITA] Questa pubblicazione raccoglie i risultati degli ultimi quindici anni di una ricerca che Luca Luciano iniziò tempo addietro quando cominciò la sua esperienza accademica in Gran Bretagna. Questi anni di studio, viaggi, scambi (con altri studiosi, musicisti, compositori di altre parti del mondo) e, soprattutto, tanta sperimentazione e tanta pratica di musica contemporanea (sia come interprete che come compositore ed improvvisatore), hanno portato a questo “Metodo per il Clarinetto Contemporaneo”. Il fine è quello di dare ad altri strumentisti la possibilità di apprendere tecniche non convenzionali utili per la musica del secolo scorso e di oggi (classica, jazz, word music, ecc.) oppure di approfondire questo argomento come parte del proprio studio e/o ricerca. Il Metodo consta di tre parti: durante la prima parte, si lavora sulle diverse tecniche estese separatamente, una per ogni capitolo, ed ogni capitolo includerà esempi ed esercizi assieme a brevi Studi concepiti per quella tecnica in particolare; la seconda parte include dieci Etudes all’interno dei quali viene usato più di un effetto sonoro, singolarmente o combinato ad un altro. L’Appendice include composizioni di Luciano presentate, tra l’altro, in prima mondiale alle prestigiose St Martin in the Fields di Londra e Cambridge University o presso altre rassegne rinomate e, sopratutto, registrate per il CD in allegato che include anche l’esecuzione di tutti gli studi singoli e dei dieci Contemporary Etudes.
L’autore costantemente incoraggia la creatività di un essere umano ed un approccio attivo verso lo studio del materiale qui presentato incentivando anche la sperimentazione ed il pensiero divergente.

[ENG] This publication sums up the last fifteen years of a research Luca Luciano started long time ago when he took up a lecturing position in the UK. All these years of study, travels around the world, interchanges (with other scholars, musicians, composers) and, above all, plenty of experimentation and contemporary music practice (as a performer and as a composer or improviser), have led to this “Introductory Method to Extended Techniques” for clarinet. The author aims at giving to other instrumentalists the possibility of learning unconventional techniques that are useful for the last century’s repertoire and today’s music (classical, jazz, world music, etc.), but also useful to those who want to approach this subject as part of their studies and/or research. The method consists of three parts: during the first part, clarinettists will work on different techniques separately, one for each chapter, and each chapter will include little examples and exercises along with short Studies designed for that specific technique; the second part features ten Etudes where more than one technique is applied on its own or combined with another sound effect. The Appendix features Luciano’s compositions recently premiered at the prestigious St Martin in the Fields in London and Cambridge University or at other established concert series and, above all, included in the attached CD along with all the recordings of the short studies and of the Contemporary Etudes. Luciano constantly encourages the creativity of a human being and an active approach to studying the material presented in this publication with a strong incentive towards experimentation and  diverging thinking.

[ITA] Compositore, interprete e didatta, “Luca Luciano è un bravissimo clarinettista nato a Napoli, poi stabilitosi nel Regno Unito, uno specialista della musica classica quanto della musica improvvisata ma anche un ottimo compositore” (Rai Radio3).Riconosciuto a livello internazionale per il suo contributo alla musica contemporanea per clarinetto (sia come compositore che come performer), comincia a soli dodici anni debuttando alla Sala Curci di Napoli. Si è laureato presso il Conservatorio di Musica di Salerno, gli fu conferita la cattedra di clarinetto a Leeds (UK)e l’onorificenza professionale di Fellow of the Higher Education Academy of Great Britain, affermandosi “come il volto familiare del clarinetto contemporaneo” a detta della Clarinet & Saxophone Society of Great Britain. Presentato dalla BBC Radio come “uno degli esponenti principali del clarinetto jazz in Europa”, Luciano si è in realtà distinto come artista indipendente, non un semplice strumentista, ma un musicista completo, un creatore-interprete in linea con la tradizione dei grandi maestri del passato. Il suo repertorio include anche Brahms, Messiaen, Stravinsky, Poulenc, Berio ed ha presentato numerose masterclass, prime mondiali di nuove composizioni alle prestigiose St Martin in the Fields di Londra e Cambridge University, si è esibito alla South Bank Centre(registrando per BBC Radio alla Royal Festival Hall) e alla Royal Albert Hall di Londra, Festival Internazionale di Edimburgo, Cattedrale Americana a Parigi, Festival Internazionale di St David in Galles, European Clarinet Festival, SESI Serie Internazionale a San Paolo in Brasile. Al di là del suo libro sulle tecniche estese, i suoi album da solista ricevono apprezzamenti dalla critica in tre continenti incluso recensioni, articoli ed interviste con interi programmi televisivi o radiofonici dedicati alla sua musica.

Luca is a noted composer and performer based in London, having developed an enviable reputation as an instrumental virtuoso around the UK and overseas via recordings and concert hall appearances” (Musicians’ Magazine). Former university lecturer in the UK and internationally recognized for his ground-breaking contributions to contemporary music (as a composer, a performer and a scholar), he debuts at the age of twelve at a prestigious hall of his home town Naples. Introduced as “the new voice of the clarinet” on the front page of De Klarinet Magazine, Luciano got his Master’s degree in Italy, has been awarded the Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and, according to the Clarinet & Saxophone Society of Great Britain, he has “established himself as the friendly face of contemporary clarinet”. Luciano has defined himself as a solo artist, not solely as an instrumentalist, but a complete musician in line with the tradition set by the great maestri of the past. His repertoire also embraces Brahms, Stravinsky, Poulenc, Berio.
