I'm Alessandra Viero, a journalist, and since 2012, I've co-hosted "Quarto Grado" with Gianluigi Nuzzi.
Over the years, we've told many stories of violence against women, of women who are no longer here. We've been the voice of these women for years, and we will continue to be.
We've done it because it's important to talk about the signs, the warning signs that exist, so that they can be recognized. Sometimes these stories are chronicles of a death foretold. So, what can be done? A new legislation is certainly needed; femicide has been established as an autonomous crime, but that's not enough.
A different approach, a different cultural sensitivity, is still needed. There's physical violence, but before that, there's psychological violence, economic violence, there's isolation from the family circle, from the social circle. These signs should not be minimized or taken for granted.
What can be done is to seek help from the outside, and each of us has the responsibility to try to recognize, as best we can, these calls for help. So that this is no longer an emergency.
I repeat, however, a new, especially cultural, approach is needed to combat femicide, which stems from the concept of possession. A woman is not possessed, she is not property to be owned.
The other thing we've often highlighted is the danger of that last appointment to clarify things, to say goodbye, which often turns into an appointment with a tragic destiny, with death. These are all signs that we try to highlight on our show "Quarto Grado", because we must first and foremost raise awareness among each of us, raise public awareness, to try to combat this phenomenon together."
