Giuliana Di Carlo
If I paint a portrait of myself, I would say that I am a fortunate person. I had wonderful parents and a carefree youth. I built a beautiful family with much love: three children and now six grandchildren.
My job at an important hospital in Rome gave me the opportunity to help many people. But when I look in the mirror, the story becomes more intimate: I defeated cancer by fighting like a lioness!
In my long battle against the disease, faced in two bouts ten years apart, I had some precious allies who fought alongside me: the doctors, my family, dear friends, and my tenacity.
In this long war, I discovered that the most important weapon to defeat cancer is prevention.
This is what I have told women: I have collaborated and continue to collaborate with various associations of "Donne in rosa" (women in pink): Le Donne del Lago, BeautifulABC Italy, Komen, Spazio Supporto Donna, ZittoCancro, Donne in Rinascita. We organize conferences, held fashion shows with the "Donne in rosa", made a calendar and videos to promote this one key concept: with prevention, you can win!
Cancer is certainly a drama, but it also brings a lot of "truth." Life becomes clearer. Pain strips you bare, and without skin, it is easier to feel and understand others' pain. Sometimes, however, that pain forces you to retreat into an intimate embrace to find the few remaining strengths within you. It is as if you are living on a swing, at the mercy of two opposing pushes: living the disease by seeking and giving solidarity, or retreating into your soul to sing yourself a lullaby and dream!
Following my inclination towards solidarity, I have put all my energy into supporting women who live through the same painful experience: I must say that, in reality, I have received much more than I have given!
Unity and confrontation with others is a kind of therapy: perhaps it does not heal, but it makes you stronger and more aware. It is as if, through the magic of solidarity, the light of a rebirth returns!
